Financial literacy for special education students and small classes

How do we teach youths to handle money wisely, and prepare them for independent lives as adults?

What is the essence of the program?

A straightforward and practical multi-year study program that imparts knowledge and tools for handling and managing money wisely and responsibly. It teaches how to understand money, earn it and safeguard it.


Why is this important?

The ability to understand money and know how to wisely handle and manage it is extremely significant in our lives. However, youths with disabilities are often dependent on figures of authority when it comes to handling money. This dependency often extends throughout their entire lives as adults. Therefore, acquiring practical knowledge and undergoing training on making financial decisions based on sound reasoning while still at school will greatly contribute to these individuals' autonomy and independence, in the present and future.


Who is the program intended for?

The program is intended for youths with disabilities with basic language functions, who are students in small classes of special education students in regular schools or in special education schools. It is also suitable for anyone wishing to learn how to manage money responsibly.


What will be learn in the program?

Understanding money – why money was invented and how it helps us in our daily lives, how prices of products and services are set, and how our emotions and beliefs about money influence the way we operate with regard to finances.


Making money – we will familiarize ourselves with the various sources of income, their advantages and disadvantages. We will focus on why it is advisable to work, how much money one can make when working, and how acquiring a profession can increase our income.


Spending money – we will understand what we spend our money on, and whether we truly need everything that is being sold to us. We will recognize what influences our decisions, and learn a simple method that will help us make wise decisions when shopping.


Managing money – we will understand what managing money means, why it is important, and which tools can help us. We will also learn about banks, and how they can help us manage our money.

Safeguarding money – we will learn how to keep our money safe from theft and from people who might want to take it away from us. We will also learn about our rights, and about avoiding being exploited.


What is special about the program?

  • The program was developed based on the recommendations of the OECD, and has been uniquely adapted to meet the needs of youths with disabilities.
  • 50 practical and experiential lesson plans have been developed to illustrate the basic concepts and well-reasoned money management by youths.
  • The program was developed in partnership with Discount Bank and Paamonim – an organization connecting the world of individuals with disabilities with the financial world, assisted by experts who provide professional and personal support.
